A Guide to Acronyms I Use Frequently
PLTW - Project Lead the Way is a national pre-engineering curriculum. Students at Jefferson are dual enrolled at Kirkwood and recieve college credit for these classes.
IED - Introduction to Engineering Design is the first class in PLTW. Students learn how to apply the design process and use computer software to build 3-D models.
POE - Principles of Engineering is the second class that PLTW reccommends. After a two-week certification course summer 2010, I will be teaching this class.
DE - Digital Electronics is the third class in the series of foundation classes. Students learn how to design, test and build various combinational and sequential logic circuits.
EDD - Engineering Design and Development is the capstone class for PLTW students. They spend an entire year solving a problem they identify. In the first year of EDD, two students applied for a patent on the product they designed (taught by Lisa Digman).
CIM - Computer Integrated Manufacturing is a specialty class that introduces students to the world of manufacturing. They build on their solid modeling skills from IED, program robots and mills, and then bring all of their skills together to create a factory simulation.
BE - Biotechnical Engineering is another specialty class. Students apply biological and engineering concepts (taught by Dr. Jim Lehman).
CEA - Civil Engineering and Architecture is the final specialty class that Jefferson offers. Students collaborate on community -based building projects and learn fundamentals of architectural design (will be taught by Lisa Digman).
